This new paperback of Madhur Jaffrey's modern culinary classic is the companion to Eastern Vegetarian Cooking: it will come as a revelation to all those whose experience of Indian cuisine has been confined to restaurants in Britain. In her fascinating Introduction the author vividly describes the vast scope of Indian cooking, the regional differences in taste and method, and the special qualities of the food of her native Delhi; she provides a comprehensive list of the various herbs and spices used in India, a glossary of cookery terms and some suggested menus. The recipes range from soups to desserts, with meat, fish and egg dishes, vegetables, rice and bread, chutneys and pickles, and a section on summer cooking and barbeques. All are clearly and simply set out, with many helpful hints from Madhur Jaffrey's own wide experience. The wealth of colourful detail and incidental information makes An Invitation to Indian Cooking as much a pleasure to read as it is to use.

How are ratings calculated? To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don't use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 April 2019 Verified Purchase Bought this book as it came recommended in a cookery magazine and it was a Madhur Jeffery's book that I didn't yet have. Really pleased with it and am looking forward to cooking more recipes from the book. It would be great for those who have yet to try cooking Indian food or for those more experienced cooks. Some reviewers mention that the spicing is too gentle, however, once you have tasted a recipe you can always adjust the spicing next time. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 February 2019 Verified Purchase Not pleased about this at all. I'm sure it's a great book but it was sold as in good condition. It is, in fact, old, shabby and wilth yellowed pages. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 July 2020 Verified Purchase Got this for my step dad. Only thing was he wanted a certain Indian dish and it wasn't in here 🙈 Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 September 2017 Verified Purchase Replacement for a copy that fell apart after decades of use. Full of reliable and trouble-free recipies. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 April 2016 Verified Purchase Had to buy this one .. as my original one that I got when we married over 38 yrs ago ... is just about falling apart due to constant use! It's a great book for beginners and for those who have a lot of Indian cookery under their belts too. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 November 2018 Verified Purchase We lost this book some time ago, and it was great to be able to replace it. thank you. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 December 2009 Verified Purchase Wonderful recipes. They contain a vast list of ingredients but the preparation and time taken is well worth the wait. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 July 2014 Verified Purchase Top reviews from United Kingdom
